William, US-amerikanischer Maler, * 11. 6. 1912 Pittsburgh, Pa., † 4. 6. 1963 New York; malte bis 1936 naturalistische Stillleben und Landschaften, ab 1941 abstrakt mit Vorliebe für Bizarr-Dämonisches; gründete 1948 mit R. Motherwell, B. Newman und M. Rothko die Schule „Subjects of the Artist“, aus der später „The Club“ hervorging.
